ABSTRACT

This chapter covers several important issues associated with coherently organizing a speech with civility firmly in mind. Strategies for organizing the speech include topical, spatial, chronological, familiar to unfamiliar, and comparative advantage. In addition, the chapter shows how one can create an effective outline based upon their chosen organizational strategy. It goes on to explain how speakers can employ different ways of gaining audience attention, and the chapter stresses the importance of providing an internal preview and using good transition to help the audience remain engaged with the speech. The chapter also illustrates how speakers can create successful introductions and conclusions.
