ABSTRACT

This chapter opens with an explanation of the distinction between informative and persuasive speaking. It also goes into detail about choosing an informative speech topic and how one can compose a thesis relevant to a general informative speech purpose. Detailed information provides insight into how speakers can use definition, description, explanation, and demonstration for effectively communicating information to an audience. The chapter also devotes attention to special occasion speeches by first defining this type of speech and then showing speakers how they can employ rhetorical tropes—such as metaphor, simile, and anaphora—for creatively giving such speeches.
