ABSTRACT

This chapter provides background on the scholarly conversation of case study research, providing discussions of the terms “digital” and “case study.” By doing so, it identifies key descriptions to expand the case study approach into a methodological paradigm based on the concept of an entity. As a conceptual and theoretical center, entity provides researchers of digital phenomena with a flexible framework for understanding the multiple realities of case study research. Entity allows digital case study researchers to have more theoretical purchase for evaluating a wide range of networked phenomena.
