ABSTRACT

Self-assessment is monitoring one’s own learning processes and products to make judgments of merit or worth about one’s outcomes. It is done on drafts of works in progress to inform revision and improvement; it is not having students determine their own grades. It can happen before, during and after creation of a product. There have been several reviews of self-assessment, including one in K-12 with an effect size of 0.45. Individual studies in creative problem solving, oral narrative production and chemistry were reviewed. Younger and less able participants were less likely to perform well metacognitively. A specimen program using artificial intelligence was then reviewed.
