ABSTRACT

Peer assessment is an arrangement for learners to consider and specify the level, value or quality of a product or performance of other equal-status learners. Related terms include peer grading/marking, peer feedback, peer evaluation and peer review. There is considerable variety in types of peer assessment. Being an assessor can be more beneficial than being assessed. Peer assessment can be just as reliable as teacher assessment. A meta-analysis of online peer assessment showed much higher effect sizes in K-12 than in higher education. Reciprocal peer assessment was more effective than one-way, rubric-supported more effective than not, and anonymous more effective than not. Individual studies (e.g., of computer programming or chemistry) have often compared self-assessment with peer assessment or used them in combination. A specimen STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) program was reported in detail.
