ABSTRACT

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the ability of a computer (or a robot controlled by a computer) to do tasks that are usually done by humans because they (used to) require human intelligence (such as reasoning and learning), or that involve data whose scale exceeds what humans are able to analyze. Artificial intelligence is older than we think and is now everywhere, whether we recognize it or not. AI can complement the teacher’s work by doing things more consistently than a teacher has time to do. AI can be complex, and it is often argued that more metacognitive skills are needed if students are to interact successfully with AI. AI does have disadvantages, such as lack of transparency, and can be used for undesirable purposes. There are a few reviews of AI and metacognition and many individual studies. However, it is important not to forget human critical thinking, which arguably needs more resourcing than AI.
