ABSTRACT

Summarization is the act of expressing the most important facts or ideas in a short and clear form and in an appropriate order, or a text in which these facts or ideas are expressed. Novice summarizers use deletions but retain much of the original text, while mature summarizers will alter words and sequence of ideas. The research literature on instruction in summarization notes that without training, summarization is often inadequate. With instruction, much better outcomes are enabled. Computers now provide automated summarization, although this does not stimulate metacognition. An exemplary program is given with implementation details.
