ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the most current refugee figures available. It stresses the diversity of the people who are known as the diaspora, indicating the catalysts of their displacement and flight from their homelands. It provides a short summary of the current, ongoing areas of unrest and identifies some areas of concern which may lead to further war, destruction, and human suffering and contribute to the already swelling numbers of refugees and asylum seekers across the globe. It highlights the numbers in refugee camps and notes that these are hosted by some of the world's poorest countries. It also emphasises the importance of early childhood educators for those fortunate enough to be resettled in new homelands.
