ABSTRACT

Other nutraceuticals can treat depression. In the case of vitamins D and B-12, supplementation treats a deficiency. Mothers who are deficient in these have a higher risk for depression. Curcumin is a key ingredient in the spice turmeric. It is highly anti-inflammatory and has been used to treat depression in general populations. It shows promise to treat postpartum depression, but its safety during pregnancy is still unknown. Finally, St. John’s wort is the most widely prescribed antidepressant in the world. Taken by itself, it has an excellent safety record, but it can interact with other prescription medications, so mothers taking it should tell their healthcare providers.
