ABSTRACT

Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is another effective method that both prevents and treats depression in new mothers. The basic tenet is that depressed people have social problems, such as conflicts, challenges with role transitions, and difficulties managing loss. Interpersonal psychotherapy helps mothers navigate changes in key relationships that have happened since they had their babies. The goal is to help women build a support network. IPT is effective even with clients from higher risk groups that are often non-compliant with medications. Treatment is short-term, but its effects can last for months.
