ABSTRACT

The neurotic who ‘seeks punishment’, or who is said to ‘seek punishment unconsciously’, is a somewhat different case. So physical pain, in its typical manifestations at least, involves an immediate and interested desire that it should stop, and a loving concern for the painful place. The attitudes involved in having an itch are simply described. Sofar as they are distinguished from itches, they seem to involve tactual perception: perception of a light contact between skin and something moving over it. People tickle each other for pleasure. However there always seems to be an ambivalent attitude involved. Tingles seem to be a perfectly neutral sort of sensation.
