ABSTRACT

To Feel giddy normally involves the feeling of being on the verge of falling, or of losing one’s balance. But the possibility of separating impression and reaction may explain what is happening in those situations where people report ‘pain’, but also report that they are quite unworried by the pain. To have an itch in a certain place is to feel a disturbance of normal bodily state at that place, together with an immediate and interested dislike of that feeling, and an impulse to try to remove the disturbance by rubbing or scratching. Tickles are a slightly more complex phenomenon. Erotic sensations are something different again. There is a sense in which one can say that there is no such class of sensations. Nausea should be classified as a bodily feeling in many cases, not a bodily sensation. Hunger is primarily the desire to eat. Tingles are a difficult class of intransitive bodily sensations to bring under general scheme.
