ABSTRACT

Lifelong educators want every child to grow, learn, and succeed. They will give the parents snippets of the research, but they promise them do not need to be a scientist or academic to understand. They share with them what works most of the time, but they will recognize that there are exceptions. They will identify some of the ways growth mindset research has been ineffectively applied so that the parents can avoid those pitfalls. If parents are looking for a quick-fix for their child’s frustrations, know that their collective expertise would advise that mindset is not a quick-fix. They cannot order a computer program on mindset and drill it into their teenager, they cannot send their college student a list of books to read about people overcoming obstacles, and they cannot just focus on praising their child for accomplishing easy tasks. Instead, they can join them on a journey to create a climate that fosters hard work, determination, and perseverance.
