ABSTRACT

As a former minister himself, Machiavelli was well aware of both the utility and the danger of a smart minister. Machiavelli was well aware of these dangers from firsthand experience, and Buckingham learns about them the hard way. Buckingham makes sure not to antagonize any of the other warring factions in court. Like Stanley, Buckingham finds it safest to play his cards close to his chest. Buckingham remains warily respectful of Elizabeth, yet he also seems to be at pains to keep his options open. Buckingham thus remains cordial to everyone and refuses to support any particular side. The fact that Buckingham chooses Richard as an ally should be emphasized, as Shakespeare’s focus on this choice reveals how strategy works dramatically.
