ABSTRACT

K. Amarnath (born Mianwali December 1, 1914–died Bombay May 14, 1983) was another veteran film-maker of Punjabi extraction. He went to school and college in Lahore. Like many others, he wanted to be an actor but discovered that his talent lay in directing actors which meant the core or decisive role imagining, planning and completing a movie. In addition, he also wrote the story and script of many of his films. He first went to Calcutta in 1932 but then shifted to Bombay where he had a marathon career in the film industry. His career as producer and director spanned over four decades and included a variety of films ranging from action to comedy and romantic epics. Three of his films had music by Shyam Sunder and each was a great musical success—Gaon Ki Gori (1945), Bazaar (1949) and Alif-Laila (1953). His other notable films Beqasoor (1950) and Bara-Dari (1955) were among the top-grossing films of those years.
