ABSTRACT

With the growth in all aspects of security and protection after World War II, it became apparent that standardization of procedures and regulations was needed. The terms “industrial security” and “plant protection” were in widespread use, but with the need for atomic plant security and computer security, more was needed. In 1955, senior members of the professional security industry gathered to form an international society for training, setting standards and providing a forum for professional security managers to meet. The American Society for Industrial Security was formed and grew to become the world’s primary security and protection organization. Standards and guidelines were published that are used worldwide, and after the year 2000, because of its international presence as well as encompassing activities well beyond industrial security, the name was changed to ASIS International.
