ABSTRACT

One of the reasons that the 9/11 terrorist attack was successful was because of a failure in the United States means for personal identification. These terrorists boarded the aircraft which they hijacked and flew into the New York City World Trade Centers because they used fake driver's licenses for their purchase of airline tickets. Their driver's licenses were authentic and passed all security checks at the airports, but the information on them was false. This occurred as a result of weak personal identification requirements in the United States, tracing back to the Constitution. Liberty, freedom, and freedom of speech, all these fundamental guarantees for each US citizen enabled these individuals to lie and fake their identity. Finally, with the enactment of the REAL ID Act of 2005, more secure and tamper-resistant documents are being instituted so that one can trust: “you are who you say you are.”

The State-issued driver’s license is not a National ID Card – it is a Nationally Recognized ID for each citizen.
