ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the various means that people have used to identify others throughout the ages. This included tattoos, tribal scare marks, and attachments along with tribal clothing and jewelry. Tribal and group identification have always been important, particularly during warfare. But in modern times, markings were transferred to badges and ID cards which became more sophisticated as the years passed. With a technology map of the centuries, one can see how photographs, advanced materials, and digital technology now provide us with “trusted and secure” ID means.
