ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the concept of the “Trusted” ID and outlines their history, beginning with the passport in the late 1800s, the mandatory requirement for passports with photographs beginning in 1914, and modern ID documents such as the current United States “Real ID Driver’s License” which is now issued only with specific “breeder” documents and a personal appearance for the driver license photograph. Trusted IDs have not only tamper-indicating properties but also must be issued by a trusted organization, generally a government agency.
