ABSTRACT

Explicit kindergarten, first-, and second-grade lessons are included within these chapters of the publication. Each lesson follows a distinct pattern that articulates different sections within the lesson and the designated activities and materials that can be used to implement these various sections that comprise the entire lesson. The sections described within each lesson parallel the various stages of how students learn: Motivation to became interested and involved in the objective of the lesson; Introduction or explanation of the purposes and procedures (skills and content ) to comprehend and activate the objective of the lesson; Application or examples of how to utilize the skill and/or content or focus of the lesson; Practice or the multiple experiences to recognize and demonstrate the skill or content objective of the lesson; Transfer or the many and varied academic, social, and individual experiences, situations, or environments when and where the skill or content can be practiced or applied; and Individualization or personalizing the utilization of the skill or content that is the focus of the lesson's objective. Each of the lessons exemplifies the integration of one or more pedagogical tools in one or several of the stages of the lesson plan. Importantly, there are three basic outcomes to be derived from these lessons: 1. To develop comprehension and appreciation for the areas of curiosity, problem solving, word meaning, and creativity as skills to be taught and experiences that reveal young students’ interests, abilities, and potential as advanced and/or gifted learners; 2. To illustrate to teachers and students the flexibility to include or insert the pedagogical tools within the context of all experiences and environments for young learners; 3. To develop the awareness of educators, parents, and students that the traits of advanced and gifted learners can be experienced as integral features of all lessons for all students to underscore the concept of “teaching for opportunity” or to have the experiences to be recognized for one's potential.
