ABSTRACT

The extreme tropical climate in many non-European countries posed great challenges for researchers, adventurers, and collectors of ethnographica. The high temperatures combined with high humidity made it much more difficult to live, collect, pack, and transport the objects, which were often collected with great difficulty. Not infrequently, they pushed the individual to the brink of physical and mental exhaustion. However, the objects themselves, made of wood, plant fibers, skin, leather, fur, and feathers, were also threatened by extreme climatic conditions and numerous insect pests in their countries of origin.
