ABSTRACT
The purpose of this chapter is to introduce the social epidemiology of mental disorder as it pertains to the measurement and analysis of social patterns of mental illness found in the general population or some segment of that population. This chapter will also examine some of the issues in determining the actual or “true” prevalence of mental disorder in communities.
