ABSTRACT

Minas Gerais—literally General Mines—is bounded on the east by mountain ranges that arise just north of Sao Paulo, and run north-eastwards, following the line of the coast till at about latitude 15 degrees south it forms an artificial boundary with the state of Bahia. Today Belo’s population is approaching the million. It is joined to Sao Paulo by a good road whose 370 miles can be done in seven hours, about the same as the 280 to Rio. Buses run throughout the twenty-four hours to both cities, offering express services with lavatories and refreshment bars aboard. Brazilian artists have been for long unmoved by the artistic currents in the world, and have clung to very formal modes of expression.
