ABSTRACT

In Europe the one thing most people know about Brazil is that there is a new capital called Brasilia, and it has been a waste of money and no one wants to live there. Ever since independence successive Brazilian constitutions have authorized the establishment of a new capital in the centre of gravity of the country on the plateau of Goias. Four years later, when the new capital was inaugurated, Brazil had a foreign debt of Euro 1,22.0 million. Yet twenty years before it was a creditor nation. People with money savings had seen them eroded to a trifle by fantastic inflation.
