ABSTRACT
In 1549 the King of Portugal, dissatisfied with his system of captaincies, decided to limit the prerogatives of his donatorios, and to establish his own representative in Brazil. America has been depopulated to provide land to grow them; and now Africa is being depopulated in order to have a nation to cultivate them.’ A new super highway is being channelled through the heart of the city, much of it underground. Around this centre is placed the University on what must be the most charming campus in Brazil. Espirito Santo is one of the most beautiful terrains in Brazil, on the coast or inland. Vitoria the capital is a mini-Santos, backed by lush valleys and sky-reaching peaks, and bordered by mangrove swamps.
