ABSTRACT

The saccharine thump-pump of the dance bands, except in the realm of jazz, seem like disjointed sawings after the grace-noted ripples of the bossa nova and samba that capture the body and mind, and take over the heart beat. As with jazz, this music has the negro element in Brazil to thank. A successful negro actress, Tereza Santos, had become their patron, and with her artistic and organizing ability Mangueira was setting out to win the first prize in the February 1967 Carnival. By Carnival in February 1967 all Rio knew the words. As the time approached deluge and disaster were forgotten. Though tourists are encouraged to come, and the Tourist Office puts over a major campaign and invites cinema personalities, Carnival is essentially something enjoyed from the inside.
