ABSTRACT

In order to provide the greatest support for students, Chapter 4 supplies Close Reading Frameworks across a wide range of literary and informational genres. A significant aspect of their use in the classroom focuses on how students should approach these texts, especially examining how these genres differ in their purpose, the way in which they convey ideas, and what pertinent details can be elicited when reading closely. Literary genres tend to be somewhat more accessible as they typically follow a similar text structure; however, the narrative elements embedded within these texts diverge and thus influence the plot, the theme, and even the way in which the storytelling itself is presented. Conversely, informational texts are commonly more difficult as their text structures fluctuate, prior knowledge may be necessary to grasp the content, specialized vocabulary is embedded throughout the passage, central ideas may be implicitly stated, and students may lack interest or motivation in the topic. For informational text, then, the Close Reading Frameworks illustrate how to alter a reader's approach depending on the genre of nonfiction. Taken together, these frameworks equip students with a clear plan for making meaning with challenging texts.
