ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at a range of persuasive techniques used in the media to try and influence and persuade. It highlights the notion of truth and the need for children (and teachers!) to be proactive when exposed to stories on TV and in social media, etc.; to check and double check supposed facts before incorporating them into personal belief systems. Linked to this are activities that flag up the importance of clear language. The notion of conspiracy theory is also examined, showing how – through the example of the Apollo moon landings – conspiracy theories can be dismantled and shown to be false through clear thinking and reasoning.
