ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 introduces Part 2 of the book, beginning by differentiating between anger and hatred. It then looks at different anatomies of hatred and how hatred has been conceptualised by various scholars before looking at how hatred has been understood by evolutionary psychologists. The chapter then looks at hatred and the idea of the ‘Other’ an important concept which recurs throughout the book as a fundamental explanation of what causes human beings to hate and carries this through to an exploration of how genocide happens. Finally, the chapter looks at how both religion and religious hatred can have addictive qualities.
