ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 introduces Part 3 of the book which looks at six dimensions of religion and how hatred can be caused or expressed through them. It begins by setting out how past scholars have tried to identify the various dimensions of religion and the arguments about what constitutes religion and whether belief systems such as Marxism, environmentalism and nationalism should be considered to be religions. The chapter then identifies the six dimensions which the author uses in Part 3: identity, doctrine and practice, the emotional and experiential, the mythological, sacred values and power and control. The chapter closes with a brief discussion of religion, religious hatred and the problem of evil.
