ABSTRACT

Technology-based education reform has become one of the key issues in education worldwide. Public and shadow education in Korea is leading the transformation in teaching and learning outcomes in this era. As the only Asian country where the internet first became widespread, the Korean education and students’ learning outcomes have greatly transformed. Korean students study using various novel and highly advanced technology-based learning programs and tools, which can be defined as post-human learning culture. This chapter explains Korea’s novel technology-based teaching and learning.

Over the past 20 years, the Korean Ministry of Education has been actively engaged in developing and applying digital instructional techniques in public education. Wi-Fi, electronic blackboards, tablets, and digital textbooks have become common in school classrooms. Computer literacy education and coding education are provided as part of the essential curricula. Shadow education in Korea is applying very innovative methods beyond technology-based education in public education. Representative examples are AI-based programs, and teaching and learning systems. Most private tutoring companies offer AI-based analysis of students’ learning habits and academic performance. The AI-powered Chatbot responds to real-time questions from students and provides timely and appropriate feedback. All these processes can be performed with just one smartphone or tablet. This reality shows how Korean students, as cyborg learners, study using technology in a post-human learning culture.
