ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the purpose of whole group instruction in the Writing Studio and focuses on how to design four different types of writing mini-lessons: demonstration, inquiry, shared, and interactive. Writing strategies for teaching writing practice, process, and craft are demonstrated as well as the role of mentor texts and how to use them in mini-lessons. Templates for each kind of mini-lesson are included along with examples illustrating teachers teaching writing mini-lessons across elementary grade levels. Chapter includes application questions, discussion prompts, and companion website resources.
