ABSTRACT

This chapter describes how the teacher of writing can individualize instruction for diverse writers through writer collaboration (peer writing and conferencing), teacher–student writing conferences, and small group instruction. Attention is given to how Universal Design for Learning principles are embedded in designing instruction and individual writing goals as the teacher of writing builds on the strengths of each child in promoting writer independence. Examples are given of teacher–student writing conferences and small group instruction to better illustrate these concepts. Chapter includes application questions, discussion prompts, and companion website resources.
