ABSTRACT

Elementary teachers teach all subject areas, not just writing, so this chapter takes a wide-angle view at planning a yearlong writing curriculum across the discipline areas of language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, and social emotional learning. A yearlong theme of Change is used to illustrate thematic and integrated writing instruction. How to adapt writing instruction for early grades is included, as well as the application of Universal Design for Learning and instruction for multilingual learners. “Bumps in the night” and other reasons for curriculum adaptation are addressed. Chapter includes application questions, discussion prompts, and companion website resources.
