ABSTRACT

This chapter explores writing development by introducing preschool, kindergarten, Grade 3, and Grade 5 writers and providing authentic writing samples as illustrations of how children develop as writers. Attention is given to multilingual writers and translanguaging. Writing, and the development of writers, is described as socially situated, mediated by culture, and as an embodied, material act. Readers are guided to consider their own belief systems and how these influence the teacher they are becoming. Chapter includes application questions, discussion prompts, and companion website resources.
