ABSTRACT

Components of the Writing Studio are introduced and illustrated through snapshots of Kindergarten, Grade 3, and Grade 5 Writing Studios. Concepts of Universal Design for Learning, social emotional learning, and culturally sustaining pedagogy are described as critically embedded elements to the Writing Studio framework. Organization in the Writing Studio (physical space, instructional resources, and writing tools) along with a description of daily routines are included, with attention given to the needs of diverse learners. The chapter includes application questions, discussion prompts, and companion website resources.
