ABSTRACT

This chapter examines six types of assessments to inform teaching and learning in the Writing Studio. These assessments include Roll Call to Action or My Writing World; Teaching, Conferencing & Planning Notebook; Daily Writing Folders; Cumulative Writing Folders; Self-Assessment; and Writing Samples. Each assessment documents writing practices, process, and craft and, taken together, can be used to show a student’s progress towards writing standards. Many illustrative examples from the Writing Studio are included. The chapter concludes with a discussion of how a teacher might approach grading. Chapter includes application questions, discussion prompts, and companion website resources.
