ABSTRACT

This chapter delves into the complex issue of rising consumption of consumer electronics, exploring the interconnected challenges of planned obsolescence, electronic waste (e-waste), and the quest for sustainable solutions. E-waste emerges as a global concern, with discarded cell phones symbolizing both a resource-rich opportunity and an environmental crisis. The chapter quantifies the valuable materials hidden within these discarded devices. It further explores legislative efforts in Europe aimed at challenging planned obsolescence and extending product lifecycles. It describes e-waste treatment practices, focusing on the social and environmental responsibility of recyclers. The chapter explores the challenges of recycling lithium-ion batteries, with an interview discussing the importance of battery reuse, efficient diagnostics, and standardization. The chapter sheds light on the supply chain transformation of the electronics industry. It features an interview with the supply chain director of Closing the Loop, an organization focused on responsible e-waste collection and recycling in Africa. Overall, the chapter paints a picture of a path toward more sustainable electronics, emphasizing circular economy, responsible material selection, processing, and product lifecycle management.
