ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the pivotal role of regulations and certifications in influencing corporate behavior, particularly in the context of environmental and social responsibility. The chapter analyzes US environmental regulation at the federal, state, and municipal levels, emphasizing the role of local governments in promoting sustainability. In addition, the chapter explores EU regulations concerning product and corporate sustainability as well as the circular economy. The chapter also features a diverse set of expert opinions on desirable future regulations and laws to enhance sustainability. The significance of certifications is discussed in detail, analyzing their role in signaling quality and commitment to stakeholders, business rationale behind their adoption, financial requirements, and limitations. Interviews with industry experts clarify the advantages that certifications offer and provide insights into the experience of becoming a B Corp and the process of obtaining ISO certifications for Quality, Environmental Management, and Health and Safety. In addition, the chapter introduces relevant corporate sustainability concepts, such as the triple bottom line. The chapter concludes by predicting the regulatory landscape of the future in regard to sustainability and materials.
