ABSTRACT

This chapter delves into the world of material consumption and its profound implications for our planet’s sustainability. It discusses the unprecedented demand for raw materials driven by the relentless pursuit of economic growth and analyzes the resource scarcity challenges of various raw materials. The chapter explores the complexities of reducing material consumption and waste, discussing concepts such as the four system conditions, digital alternatives to material use, zero-waste-to-landfill, and lean manufacturing. An interview with a business consultant underscores the connection between lean manufacturing and environmental sustainability. Integrating these two disciplines can lead to significant improvements in resource management. In addition, the chapter highlights the importance of a holistic transition from a linear to a circular economy for resource conservation.
