ABSTRACT

Systems and playing styles receive more and more attention these days. Many coaches do not employ just one system of play, but rather they choose from a variety of systems to optimally react to an opponent’s performance, even during the game. A prime example from the Bundesliga is 1. FC Köln. Positional data open plenty of new possibilities to model tactical aspects of the game, find patterns, and create novel, advanced performance measures. This chapter investigates how previously introduced key performance indicators affect Cologne’s performance when playing in a 4-4-2 compared to a 4-2-3-1 system and discusses the findings.
