ABSTRACT

This chapter concludes the book and weaves together the previous material, contending that for dating app users within Berlin, dating apps and digital communication platforms operate as highly socialised and culturally narrativised media, which are seen to host various meanings in relation to intimacy. Users position their sense of self alongside, or in opposition to, the narratives spun around the media they use and the city within which they operate, playing with the spaces and places they occupy as part of the dating rituals embedded within Berlin. Dating apps permeate the everyday life of their users and act as objects of meaning-making, incorporated into rituals reliant on seeing intimacy, and emotional engagements with romance, as a practice and a shareable experience.
