ABSTRACT

It is really interesting to consider the complexities that are now emerging about the workings of our two cerebral hemispheres. Over these hemispheres, neurology does not just give us a new, interesting piece of knowledge, it actually casts light on puzzles that are already making trouble in our lives. Researchers studying these were at first puzzled by the strange duplication because they found it hard to see that the right hemisphere was doing any work at all. The left half seemed to be much better at solving the kind of intelligence tests that readily occurred to them; so it was taken to be in charge and was at first called the “dominant hemisphere”. The controversy chiefly centred on the case of “split-brain patients”, people who had the connection between their hemispheres severed for medical purposes, but of course what this procedure reveals about the structure of their brains must also be true of the rest of us.
