ABSTRACT

Social media have become a breeding ground for trolls and bots, which Russia uses to divide society in target countries, cultivate fear, and spread conspiracy theories. In Latvia, an IT-savvy country, most of the population uses Internet media and social media daily, which makes the young audience, who use the Internet as their main source of information, especially vulnerable. Internet trolls orchestrated by Vladimir Putin’s “chef” Yevgeny Prigozhin actively work to spread the Kremlin’s narratives about the Baltic states, NATO, and the European Union. Latvia is working to strengthen the resilience of its society and reduce the destructive effects of propaganda and misinformation. This chapter analyzes the Kremlin’s media audience and the asymmetric nature of the presence of Russian media in Latvia.
