ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses two more theories of performance in identity. The first is D.W. Winnicott's False and True selves, in which the lack of balance between subjective omnipotence and objective reality creates a child who performs in adult life. And as we explore Karen Horney's theory of the idealized image, we learn how a child who felt misattuned to or unloved can turn into an adult who imagines their identity as something grandiose or unrealistic.
