ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the background to the debate on parental engagement in transition to school, and positions the book within this field of research. This chapter mainly clarifies the differences between transition to school and school readiness; and between parental engagement and parental involvement, especially in the context of China and Australia in this book. This chapter also discusses parents’ perceptions and practices on transition to school, and factors that influence their engagement. It examines the key contributions to the debate and assesses where there are significant research gaps. This chapter also explains the impetus for the book and important knowledge gaps.
