ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on how parents engage in their children's transition to school. Parental engagement consists of home-based engagement and school-based engagement. According to the results of the survey, Chinese parents engaged more in school-based transition practices than Australian parents, while Australian parents engaged more in home-based transition practices than Chinese parents. The analysis of interviews show that Australian parents engaged in home conversations, school familiarisation activities and socio-emotional preparation activities. School-based engagement focused on communication and collaboration between parents and teachers, consisting of parent–teacher communication, school and kindergarten activities and accompanying children at school.
