ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses key aspects of the results from previous chapters, including the comparison of Chinese and Australian parents’ transition perceptions and engagement, and the influence of globalisation and localisation on the two groups of parents’ perceptions and engagement. Similarities and differences between Chinese and Australian parental engagement in transition to school are highlighted in this chapter. Based on the similarities between Chinese and Australian parents, findings of this study indicate that transition to school is an ecological transition process, consisting of school preparation and school adjustment, which has intergenerational influence within the family. Differences between home-based and school-based engagement practices represent a surprising point of departure from previous studies. These differences between Chinese and Australian parents’ transition perceptions and engagement may be explained by the influence of localisation of policies and cultures, which may create tension for the parents.
