ABSTRACT

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) are crucial organizational issues. They have clear links to psychological well-being (PWB), psychological capacity, and to thriving cultures of continuous improvement (CI), and organizational performance. In this chapter, we will explore what diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging mean and why they matter for us as individuals and for business. CI and DEIB are rarely discussed in the same sentence. Yet there is huge potential for the CI system, and tools, to help create thriving cultures of DEIB, and for CI practitioners to recognize that DEIB is not the preserve of HR, but is integral to CI work. We will consider how CI and DEIB can work together to create PWB, increase psychological capacity, and create true cultures of belonging which are the foundation for a thriving culture of CI and innovation. All this needs to start with an inside-out approach focused on the individual, versus the “cookie-cutter” approach which predominates.
