ABSTRACT

The first chapter outlines the purpose of the study skills guide. It explains the motivation behind publishing the book, which is to help those returning to academia or part-time doctorates to complete their programmes successfully. The chapter provides a brief overview of different types of doctoral paths, known as the third cycle of education and learning goals. It emphasises the personal, scholarly, and societal benefits of advanced academic study and research. The chapter closes with a summary of key concepts and recommended exercises. It introduces the first doctoral completion trigger, Motivation, covered in Part I of the book. The motivation chapter delves into the mindset and motivation of part-time candidates who commit two, four, or even six years of their lives to gain insight, demonstrate expertise, and create new knowledge by completing a doctorate.
